Don't ask me where I got this idea from...I think it had something to do with trying to shelve books in the same section as another co-worker and suddenly imagining what would have happened if we were living in the days of the Wild West.

This is my favorite one so far. I often felt like this when I was a page, although it was more often with patrons than co-workers.

Thanks Anne! I had a tough time coming up with the final panel for this one and felt that it was lacking in the humor department. But I know what you mean...trying to get around patrons in the aisles can be difficult, especially when they're camped out on the floor surrounded by books.

Something similar happens to me every time I go to the grocery store. Some folks don't know how to stay on their side of the aisle!

I didn't know throwing down the gauntlet was an option! I just always got out of the way and shelved somewhere else... now I feel like a complete wuss.

This was funny. I do agree that it happens more often with patrons in the aisles than other pages, at least for me. This is probably due to the fact that there's seldom more than one page on duty at a time. We're a small library.

My favorite patrons that camp are not the ones that sit with a stack of books around them, because at least you know you only have to shelve around them once. The ones I have show-downs with are the ones who are browsing the stacks, not really knowing what they're looking for, and no matter what book is in your hand, they're always standing right in front of where it needs to go.

You go shelve somewhere else with a different stack of books, and they're magically there before you, but you never saw them leave. You say "excuse me" and go around them, and move on to the next aisle, and you have to say it again. This continues and they get annoyed with you, like it's your fault that they don't know what they're looking for. You ask if you can help them find anything and they bite your head off and accuse you of calling them incompetent. And suddenly they've disappeared, as mysteriously as they arrived, and you wonder what was in that hot chocolate you drank that morning to make such a weird experience.
