I'd like to point out that this actually hasn't happened to me, but it's only a matter of time. Thanks again to everyone for all the great comments with insights and stories from other libraries.
Have a great 2007!

It happened to one of my colleagues. She was buying a train ticket and the guy slid a library book back to her with her change and said "could you return this for me when you get to work?"

Most people recognize me but don't ask me to return books. They do ask me reference questions though.

I like it when people start to yell at me about their fines and ask me to fix it for them. "dude, I'm just a page. I have no power..."

I once had a library patron come up to me in the local drug store and after saying 'hello', asked me if I knew where they kept the asprin.

ah yes... this actually happens to me all the time, not with overdue books, but with reference questions and things like "did that book I requested come in yet?"

I had this happen to me. A patron I've helped several times recognised me and dumped his library books onto my lap. "Thanks for saving me a trip," he exclaimed. I reluctantly stuffed them into my overloaded backpack.
