Honestly, patrons drop the most random items down the book return. Still looking for your remote control underneath the couch cushions? You might want to try the lost & found at your local library.

Someone did urinate down the book drop at the UGA library. We also have gotten videos from Blockbuster and Vision Video returned to us.

Okay, I can sort of understand the videos, the rented games and even car keys (oopsie). But a tire iron? And how drunk do you have to be to think that urinating down the chute is a good idea?

My book-loving soul just shudders.

I once found a wooden stake with a huge clump of dirt still attached to it in the book drop. There was dirt all over the place.

Found in our bookdrops:

-several pounds of mulch (probably tossed in by kids from the flower beds outside)
-a power sander disc (huh?)
-a used diaper (ewww)

Came here via Unshelved; nice comics!

We once had someone vomit in our book drop

We've had a potted geranium, a McDonald's strawberry milkshake PARTLY still in it's container, three eggs (yes, broken) and a wallet with credit cards...

I once asked this question on a few library list-servs and THREE separate people (2 in the USA, 1 in New Zealand) reported having had live kittens left in their bookdrops!

Came here via Unshelved. Good luck with the cartoons!

Maybe if you have RFID tags in your books (like my library does) you can make the bookdrop "open up" only if you actually had a library item in your hands. Just like you need a credit card to enter some banks' ATM areas after hours.

At the library that this cartoonist works in, someone came in one morning and found a kitten in the book drop. SHe was adopted by one of the staff.

A kitten? That's horrible! Who would drop a poor little kitty down the bookdrop?

Jayson, these are hilarious, you are a right talented fellow! And to think, you came up with this cartoon even before that unfortunate incident with the curry...
